Colin Granger Signs with Carolina Panthers as Tight End Prospect
The Carolina Panthers have made a significant move by signing Colin Granger, a 6-foot-8, 245-pound athlete with a background in Division I basketball, to develop as a tight end. Granger recently completed five years of basketball at Ohio University, Western Carolina University, and Coastal Carolina University.
Due to being five years past his high school graduation, Granger was eligible to sign as a free agent and was not drafted in the previous year.
Competition for Roster Spots
Granger will enter a competitive tight end group that includes:
- Tommy Tremble
- Ja’Tavion Sanders
- Jordan Matthews
- James Mitchell
- Dominique Dafney
Coaching Experience with Athletes
Head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan, both with experience in Seattle, are accustomed to transitioning basketball players to football. During their time with the Seahawks, they were involved in signing George Fant, a former hybrid tackle/tight end who also had a basketball background.
Granger’s situation is somewhat different, however, as he has not played football since middle school. Despite this, the Panthers see potential in his athleticism and are hopeful he can mirror the success of notable tight ends like Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, and Jimmy Graham, who successfully transitioned from basketball to the NFL.
