Filming at the Iconic British Grand Prix
As the British Grand Prix approached in 2023, actor Damson Idris found himself in an exhilarating position. Surrounded by notable figures like reigning world champion Max Verstappen and Hollywood star Brad Pitt, Idris prepared to embrace his role as Joshua Pearce, a rookie driver in the fast-paced world of Formula 1.
With the iconic “God Save the King” anthem playing, Idris felt a rush of adrenaline as he transitioned to his character, navigating the chaos of real F1 mechanics and cars. They were filming a critical moment in the $300 million production, F1, with no room for errors during this live-action scene.
Immersive Racing Experience
Idris described the feeling as akin to performing on stage. The atmosphere was electric, with classic Queen tracks like “We Will Rock You” setting an energetic backdrop as he prepared to step back to the fictional APX GP race car.
“It was kind of like being on stage, like theater,” said Idris. “As soon as I spun around… I should stop freaking out! Let me act!”
Plot Overview and Production Details
The film follows Pearce and Hayes, played by Pitt, as they navigate the challenges faced by the struggling APX GP team during the 2023 F1 season. As an aging driver on a redemption arc, Pitt’s character helps showcase the intense dynamics of racing.
Producers Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski committed to using real-world settings rather than relying solely on CGI. Filming took place during actual Grand Prix weekends with actors driving modified Formula 2 cars that looked like F1 contenders.
Training and Performance
To ensure authenticity, both actors underwent extensive training with real racing professionals. Notably, Lewis Hamilton, an executive producer, participated in training sessions, offering advice and guidance to the cast.
Despite their high-performance vehicles, it was not just about speed; they had to master the techniques of racing. “The first time I met [Joe and Jerry]… I was petrified!” Idris recalled regarding his preparation behind the wheel.
Insights from Filming
In a light-hearted exchange during an interview, Idris joked about who would emerge as the faster driver: himself or Pitt. “I have to say me,” he laughed. “But that man is so quick!”
The camaraderie was evident, with Idris expressing admiration for Pitt’s humility and collaborative spirit throughout the filmmaking process.
Future Aspirations
Idris’s enthusiasm for motorsport has escalated following his experiences on set. He expressed interest in participating in charity races alongside other actors known in the motorsport world.
“I won’t tell you what team principal pulled me aside… but I would love to jump on the track and race!” he stated excitedly.
Anticipation for Release
As the release date approaches in June, fans are eagerly awaiting a cinematic take on the thrilling world of F1, combining real-life racing dynamics with compelling storytelling. Idris reflects on his journey, remarking, “I can’t wait to see the film and how the drivers react to it.”
