Dillon Mitchell Joins St. John’s: Key Addition for the Red Storm
By Jeff Borzello
In a significant move for the upcoming season, Dillon Mitchell has committed to St. John’s after transferring from Cincinnati. This addition solidifies the Red Storm’s position as a potential preseason top-five team.
Mitchell’s Background
Mitchell, a 6-foot-8 forward, began his collegiate career at Texas before spending the last season with the Bearcats. He attracted attention as a top-five recruit and a McDonald’s All-American in high school, showcasing his talent on a national level.
Last season at Cincinnati, he averaged 9.9 points per game while pulling down 6.9 rebounds, shooting an impressive 61% from the field.
Impact on St. John’s
Under the guidance of head coach Rick Pitino, Mitchell represents the fifth elite recruit to join the St. John’s roster this season. His fellow transfers include:
- Ian Jackson (North Carolina)
- Bryce Hopkins (Providence)
- Joson Sanon (Arizona State)
- Oziyah Sellers (Stanford)
All these newcomers are ranked among ESPN’s top 100 transfers and will join first-team All-Big East selection Zuby Ejiofor, forming a robust foundation for the Red Storm’s roster in the 2025-26 season.
Playing Style and Versatility
Mitchell’s versatility adds a significant dimension to St. John’s gameplay. He possesses explosive athleticism that enhances both his defensive capabilities and transition play. This allows for a flexible offensive strategy, whether he plays as a power forward with Bryce Hopkins on the wing or takes on a small-ball center role alongside four perimeter players, adapting to various matchups effectively.
Current Rankings and Projections
Before Mitchell’s commitment, St. John’s was already positioned as No. 3 in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings, indicating strong expectations for their performance in the upcoming season.
