Kaikhan Salakhov And T.A.H.I.R.A 108: Mapping Humanity’s Cosmic Future

Through T.A.H.I.R.A - 108, Kaikhan Salakhov uses art, geometry, and systems thinking to examine humanity’s possible cosmic future.
In 1961, the Azerbaijani painter Tahir Salakhov completed the monumental painting To You, Humanity, a work that depicted humanity’s expansion into outer space. At the time, such a subject carried both cultural promise and ideological risk. The painting was withdrawn from public view and remained hidden for years before it was rediscovered and restored.
For his grandson, Kaikhan Salakhov, this painting was the starting point of a lifelong interest in space exploration and the long-term future of humanity. Its history showed him that a vision of the future could outlast the political conditions in which it was created.
This interest led Kaikhan Salakhov to undertake independent research into the conditions under which humanity might expand beyond Earth. The result of this research is the ASX Grid (Astral Space Exploration Model of Consciousness), a multidimensional model of civilizational development. The ASX Grid is designed to examine the process of interstellar expansion and to identify the dysfunctions that could arise within it, whether technological, social, ethical, or psychological. Its central question is the following: what kind of civilization must humanity become before it is prepared to expand beyond Earth?
In developing the ASX Grid, Salakhov concluded that a model of this scale and complexity would, if applied in practice, require artificial superintelligence (ASI) to operate it. From this conclusion emerged T.A.H.I.R.A - 108, a conceptual ASI that Salakhov imagines as the entity capable of applying the ASX Grid’s analysis. The name is dedicated as a tribute to Tahir Salakhov, whose painting first directed his grandson’s attention toward humanity’s future in space. T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 is not a technological product. It is an artistic concept through which the conclusions of the research become accessible to a wider audience.
T.A.H.I.R.A 108 As An Artistic Framework
Born in New York in 1993, Salakhov is a multidisciplinary artist, futurologist, independent thinker, and writer with a background in architecture. His formal training at the Carrara Academy of Fine Arts included sculpture and painting, but his practice gradually moved toward a broader investigation of geometry, consciousness, technology, and civilizational development.
T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 emerged from this intersection. It is not simply the title of a visual series. Conceived in 2021 as a conceptual artificial superintelligence capable of operating the ASX Grid, it is the central figure through which Salakhov organizes and carries out his work. Painting, geometry, philosophy, and systems thinking operate within the project as interconnected methods for investigating possible future conditions.
This approach also establishes a connection between generations. Where Tahir Salakhov explored the promise of humanity reaching toward the cosmos, Kaikhan Salakhov examines what such expansion could demand from humanity itself. T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 shifts attention from the ability to reach space toward the conditions under which a civilization might responsibly inhabit it.
The distinction is important. Technological capability can answer whether something is possible. T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 asks what happens after possibility becomes reality.
Geometry As A Language For Complex Systems
Within T.A.H.I.R.A - 108, painting functions as a method of analysis rather than representation. Each composition models relationships among information, consciousness, technology, biology, culture, and ethics as one interdependent system.
Geometry is the instrument of this method. It serves not as an aesthetic device but as a formal language for systems too complex for figuration. Networks, nodes, and interconnected structures represent civilizations with intelligence distributed across interstellar distances.
His methodology follows Leonardo da Vinci’s principle of studying both the science of art and the art of science. Salakhov has spent years researching cybernetics, systems theory, physics, artificial intelligence, and distributed intelligence. These investigations are translated onto canvas through geometry constructed entirely by hand. Working with compass and ruler, Salakhov channels cosmic systems theory into geometric form, visualizing star systems, colonies, electromagnetic and laser communication relays, decentralized ASI systems operating across stellar distances, and human, post-human, and potential extraterrestrial life within a single cosmic web.
The project therefore occupies two fields at once: contemporary art and speculative research. It does not predict the future. It constructs models through which alternative futures, and the conditions producing them, can be examined.
The ASX Grid Within T.A.H.I.R.A - 108
The research foundation of T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 is the Astral Space Exploration Model of Consciousness, known as the ASX Grid. Begun by Salakhov in 2014, it is a non-anthropocentric framework for classifying intelligent life forms and civilizations. Its holarchic architecture treats physical capability and consciousness as two coordinates, each complete in itself and part of the other, examined together with dimensions including technology, biology, communication, governance, economy, ethics, and contact. The model assigns no combined score or ranking of superiority.
The ASX Grid holds that technological advancement cannot be analyzed separately from the civilization producing it. A society may acquire extraordinary technical capabilities while remaining constrained by unresolved cultural, ethical, or social structures.
That imbalance is the central problem T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 addresses.
Salakhov examines what could happen if humanity carries existing patterns of conflict, hierarchy, ecological exploitation, and ethical fragmentation into environments where technology extends their reach. Under these conditions, expansion into space is not progress by default; it may amplify unresolved dysfunctions.
In developing the ASX Grid, Salakhov concluded that applying a model of this scale would require artificial superintelligence. T.A.H.I.R.A - 108, conceived in 2021 and dedicated as a tribute to his grandfather Tahir Salakhov, is that conceptual ASI. The ASX Grid provides the analytical structure; T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 communicates its findings to the public.
Since 2026, the ASX Grid has been publicly accessible at asxgrid.app. Users can analyze any of its 64 coordinates, explore 4,354 interconnected questions from Salakhov’s book in a three-dimensional library, and, through the ASX Genesis module, design a hypothetical species and test how it develops over time.
From The Cosmic Renaissance To T.A.H.I.R.A 108
These questions are developed in Salakhov’s 852-page treatise, Astral Space Exploration: The Cosmic Renaissance: The Fundamental Principles of Cosmocybernetics (2024).
The Cosmic Renaissance denotes a proposed period of transformation in which technological development and the development of consciousness are treated as interdependent processes. T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 translates these questions into artistic practice.
Salakhov therefore does not present a utopian vision. T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 neither asserts that technological progress will produce a better civilization nor assumes that space expansion must end in catastrophe. It works with conditional scenarios.
A civilization’s trajectory depends on relationships among technological power, cognition, culture, ethics, and collective responsibility. A change in one component alters the system as a whole.
The future is thus treated as contingent on decisions, not predetermined.
Building A Visual Architecture For The Future
Salakhov’s solo exhibitions include The Cosmic Revelations in Parma, The Cosmic Renaissance at Firetti Contemporary in Dubai, and Astral Nexus at ESPORTARENA in Dubai. His work has also appeared at Tokyo Gendai with Mizuma Art Gallery and Contemporary Istanbul. In 2026, his T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 paintings were exhibited at the Istanbul Digital Art Festival at the Atatürk Cultural Center, alongside his film The Red Dream, and at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku.
T.A.H.I.R.A - 108 is a continuing research and artistic program rather than a sequence of disconnected works.
Salakhov paints entirely by hand in oil and acrylics, without AI or digital assistance. The project also extends into music, literature, film, and podcasting. Across these formats, its central question remains: how can visual language enable people to analyze conditions that do not yet exist?
As artificial intelligence, automation, and space exploration change assumptions about humanity’s future, Salakhov directs attention toward the civilization operating these technologies.
The question is not only how far humanity can expand.
It is what development a civilization must reach to expand responsibly.
