Nvidia Expands Its AI Ambitions With $12.93 Billion Hugging Face Acquisition

Nvidia is expanding its position in artificial intelligence with an agreement to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, combining one of the world's leading AI computing companies with a major platform for developers working with open and open-weight models.
The transaction represents a major strategic move for Nvidia because Hugging Face operates at a different layer of the AI industry. Nvidia supplies much of the computing infrastructure used to train and run AI systems, while Hugging Face provides developers with access to models, datasets and applications used to build AI products.
The combination could give Nvidia a substantially larger role across the AI technology ecosystem.
According to Nvidia, more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use Hugging Face. The platform contains more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications. More than 200,000 companies use the platform for activities including discovering, evaluating, customizing and deploying AI.
Those figures make Hugging Face considerably more than a conventional software startup. Its platform has become an important distribution and collaboration environment for developers experimenting with AI models.
Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said the acquisition would help scale Hugging Face's platform, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to artificial intelligence.
The deal also reflects the changing structure of the AI market. Competition is increasingly taking place across the entire technology stack rather than solely between individual AI models.
Companies now compete over processors, networking, data centers, cloud infrastructure, model development, software frameworks and developer platforms. The ability to connect these components can create advantages for businesses serving customers throughout the AI development process.
Nvidia's acquisition of Hugging Face places the company closer to developers who select and customize AI models. That could strengthen Nvidia's relationship with companies building AI applications and potentially create new opportunities for its broader computing business.
At the same time, Nvidia has said that Hugging Face will remain an open platform. Developers will continue to be able to choose their preferred models, frameworks, cloud services, inference providers and computing platforms.
Nvidia has also stated that its own computing technology will not be required for developers to build or deploy through Hugging Face.
That commitment is significant because platform openness has been central to Hugging Face's appeal. Developers use the service to work with technology from different organizations and computing environments. Maintaining that flexibility could help preserve the platform's role across the wider AI ecosystem.
The transaction also arrives as the technology industry faces increasing demand for computing resources. AI systems require substantial processing capacity, and Nvidia has benefited from demand for its accelerated computing products.
However, large technology companies are also developing their own specialized AI chips and infrastructure. A stronger software and developer presence could help Nvidia maintain a broad position even as competition increases in hardware.
The agreement is expected to face regulatory review before completion. Nvidia has indicated that it expects the transaction to close during the first half of 2027 if required conditions and approvals are satisfied.
The acquisition also illustrates how the economics of artificial intelligence are developing. As AI becomes more widely integrated into business software and consumer applications, companies that control the tools used to build and deploy those systems can become strategically important.
Hugging Face's large developer community provides Nvidia with access to a network that was built around experimentation, collaboration and open models. That community could become increasingly valuable as organizations seek AI systems that can be customized rather than relying exclusively on closed services.
For businesses, the deal is another indication that AI infrastructure and software are becoming increasingly interconnected. Organizations evaluating AI tools will continue to consider not only model performance but also computing requirements, deployment options, interoperability and developer support.
The Nvidia-Hugging Face agreement consequently marks a significant expansion of Nvidia's technology strategy. Rather than remaining primarily associated with the hardware powering AI, the company is moving deeper into the platforms where developers discover, adapt and deploy artificial intelligence.
