Pasqal's Nasdaq Debut Brings Quantum Computing Deeper Into the Public-Market Spotlight

Quantum computing gained a new publicly traded company Friday as France-based Pasqal began trading on Nasdaq following a business combination that provided approximately $360 million for its next stage of development.
Shares rose as much as 73% during the trading session before finishing roughly 40% higher, reflecting intense investor interest in a technology sector that remains experimental but has attracted growing amounts of government and private investment.
Pasqal entered the public market after completing its combination with Bleichroeder Acquisition Corp. II. The transaction had valued the quantum-computing company at approximately $2 billion before the deal.
The company develops computers using neutral atoms, one of several competing technologies being explored by researchers attempting to build useful quantum machines.
Quantum systems differ fundamentally from conventional computers.
Traditional processors use bits representing either zero or one. Quantum computers use qubits that can exhibit quantum properties allowing certain types of calculations to be approached differently.
The potential applications are significant, but so are the technical challenges.
Researchers hope advanced quantum machines could eventually contribute to fields such as materials research, chemistry, optimization and other computational problems that can be exceptionally difficult for conventional computers.
Current machines, however, remain vulnerable to errors and generally cannot replace conventional computing for ordinary commercial workloads.
Pasqal is attempting to bridge that gap by operating existing quantum processors while developing technology intended to progress toward fault-tolerant computing.
The company currently has seven quantum-processing units deployed and three additional systems in production. Its hardware is being used across more than 25 commercial and research applications, according to company information released in connection with the listing.
Pasqal was founded in 2019 and counts Nobel Prize-winning physicist Alain Aspect among its co-founders.
Aspect shared the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics for experimental work involving entangled photons and quantum mechanics, research that helped lay foundations for modern quantum-information technologies.
The company's approach uses arrays of neutral atoms controlled by lasers to perform computations.
Its ability to attract hundreds of millions of dollars through a U.S. public listing shows the increasing financial scale of the quantum industry.
European quantum companies alone have announced more than 1 billion euros in financing this year across a range of hardware and enabling technologies, according to industry reporting.
Large U.S. technology companies are investing heavily as well.
IBM, Google and other developers have established long-term programs intended to improve quantum hardware, error correction and software.
Governments view the technology as strategically important because advanced quantum systems could eventually affect scientific research, cybersecurity, industrial development and national computing capacity.
Pasqal's public listing therefore arrives as competition in quantum computing begins to resemble earlier technology races in semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
The industry's commercialization timeline remains uncertain.
Quantum computers must become substantially more reliable before many proposed applications can operate at useful scale, and companies may spend years developing systems before generating revenue comparable with established technology businesses.
Pasqal reported approximately 16.5 million euros in revenue last year, according to Reuters.
The newly available capital gives the company more resources to expand manufacturing, deploy additional machines and develop its cloud platform.
Its manufacturing facilities in France and Canada currently have capacity to produce up to 13 quantum machines annually.
Pasqal remains headquartered in France despite choosing Nasdaq for its first public listing. The company has also discussed pursuing a future listing on Euronext Paris.
Friday's strong debut does not resolve the technological uncertainties surrounding quantum computing, nor does a rising share price prove commercial success.
It does demonstrate that the sector has entered a new stage of visibility.
Quantum companies are increasingly gaining access to the same large pools of capital that helped finance previous waves of computing innovation.
Whether those investments ultimately produce practical quantum machines remains one of the technology industry's most important long-term questions.
